“Appearances”: A Poem by Santi Tafarella

The worst thing to tell

your ex-lover is

“I’m happy.”

And so he never told her

that he was happy,

but gave her

every appearance

that he was unhappy.

Indeed, you could

see her

light up

whenever she saw him,

for she believed

that he was unhappy.

And everyone who

saw them together said,

It’s a shame they broke up.

They seem to understand

one another.

And look, why just look

how she glows

to see him!

I think that they

are still in love.

See how pained he appears,

how he seems to miss her.
