She Was For It Before She Was Against It: Sarah Palin, on Video, SUPPORTING the “Bridge to Nowhere”

The next time John McCain says that Sarah Palin is a good-government reformer because she opposed the pork-barrel federal “Bridge to Nowhere” Alaska project, I hope that the electorate starts to absorb the FACT that as a candidate for governor, she supported the “Bridge to Nowhere,” and as governor, only after the program became a national joke, did she then oppose it:

Your suggestion that Palin changed her position on the bridge because it had become “a national joke” doesn’t hold water. The bridge was a popular project in Alaska, and she was the governor of Alaska at the time. So if she were following the wind, she would have continued to support the bridge and it would have been built. Instead she changed her position from a popular one to an unpopular one.

Your assertion that, as governor, she somehow bucked popular opinion to do the right thing, and return the money to the Federal government, and not waste it on pork barrel projects, misses this little fact: SHE DID NOT RETURN THE MONEY.

Instead, she channeled it from a program that was proving to be an embarrassment to Republicans (the bridge to nowhere) to OTHER PORK BARREL PROJECTS IN HER STATE.

In other words, she made a political calculation, and then used the money to pay-off other constituencies.

She NEVER sent the money back to Washington. Period.

And yet she keeps using the bridge to nowhere as an example of her good government bona fides.

But not ONE DIME was saved by the federal taxpayer because of what Palin did.

    Think about that.

Today’s Wall Street Journal has a full article on Palin’s “Bridge to Nowhere” claims. Money quote:

“Despite significant evidence to the contrary, the McCain campaign continues to assert that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin told the federal government ‘thanks but no thanks’ to the now-famous bridge to an island in her home state.”
