2008 Presidential Debate 1.0: See John McCain Sing “Bomb Bomb Iran”—and Barack Obama Call McCain on It

Below was a rather memorable moment in the first presidential debate between John McCain and Barack Obama.

McCain suggested that Obama was imprudent to say aloud that the United States must make incursions into Pakistan to get terrorists, even if the Pakistani government can’t or won’t assist us.

It gave the impression that McCain was more concerned about the territorial integrity of Pakistan’s border with Afghanistan than with hunting down terrorists and protecting America.

Obama’s response was direct and forceful, and reminded the audience of McCain’s own imprudent gestures, such as his joking about bombing Iran:

This was a strong moment for Obama in the debate because he had a more forceful position on Pakistan than McCain, and it reminded the audience that McCain’s self-righteous castigating of Obama to be more “serious” and “prudent” in his foreign affairs statements was actually hypocritical posturing that McCain himself did not practice.

Here’s McCain singing “Bomb Bomb Iran”:
