Question of the Day: Why Did God Let Mariana Bridi Suffer So Horrifically?

Why would God let a beautiful young woman go through the ordeal described below, and then also permit her to DIE, decimating the souls of her parents (who, by the way, live in poverty)?

Her name was Mariana Bridi.

What kind of a God is this—who permits (or causes!) vulnerable human beings, made with emotions and a god-like consciousness, to undergo such apparently senseless mental and physical anguish?

And how can one pray for the relief of one’s own suffering—knowing that throughout human history, others prayed without effect, and continue to pray, and still suffer from seemingly relentless evils?

In short, why, if God exists, is there such horrific suffering in the world—and why doesn’t he do anything about it?

Here’s her story (as reported in the Huffington Post):

One month ago, 20-year-old beauty queen Mariana Bridi was living the dream of many young Brazilian women, trading her striking good looks for a modeling career that promised to lift her family out of poverty.

Then she contracted a seemingly ordinary urinary tract infection. The bacteria spread quickly and inexorably through her body, proving to be extremely drug resistant. In a desperate bid to save her life, doctors amputated her hands and feet. But by Saturday she was dead.

“God is comforting our hearts because he wanted her to be with him now,” her father Agnaldo Costa told reporters outside the hospital where his daughter died. “I can’t accept that my daughter left us so soon.”

What is this cross of history that we have all been cast upon?
