Wow.. i Just Hope All This Poeple Are In A Better Place And Are Happy..
The photograph is, of course, very upsetting. But it is, sadly, a mild image compared to many others of the period and compared to some modern outrages. I was born 11 years after the date of the photograph and remember seeing countless such images in the media throughout my childhood as the war was revealed, reviewed and unpicked by the politicians and social historians of 1960s.
One of the greatest things to come out of that political review process was the European Union. My alarm at the current rise of nationalist and far right politics in Europe convinces me all the more that secular bridge-building must continue to counter the rise of extremist forces everywhere.

I’m much saddened by some of the anonymous comments above; they strike me as anti-semitic and cruel. The fact that the cowards that make these comments don’t make them under their own names just underlines how weak are their arguments. Their completely inappropriate ‘gallows humour’ (if that is what is being attempted) strikes one as the humour of fascists and nazis; who else could be so insensitive? It’s too upsetting.
