Soviet Hammer & Sickle Shirts Being Sold at Amazon

Below is a disturbing shirt being sold at Amazon.

I don’t oppose the shirt being sold, only disturbed that people are so ignorant of the history of the 20th century that they would think it “cool” to wear it. Or worse: they know that history well, and are nostalgic for its return. Hip, hip hooray for Lenin, Stalin, Brezhnev, and Yuri Andropov? Someone who would wear the Soviet hammer &  sickle on a shirt might just as well wear a Nazi swastika. You can, by the way, get the shirt in any of 12 colors! Fuck Vaclav Havel, Andrei Sakharov, and Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, huh?

you are an idiot for ever even comparing the soviets to the nazi’s, they both absolutely hated each other, the nazi’s started killing communists long before they started killing jews, your obviously just an ignorant pig

    Worker of the World:

Look, I’m a liberal. I’m not some paranoid, rabid right-winger posting anti-leftist propaganda on my blog site. But the history of the 20th century is clear: German Nazism and Soviet Communism functioned as totalitarian systems. Neither you nor I would have wanted to live under either of these two systems. Please read Anne Applebaum’s well reviewed history of the Soviet prison system (her book is simply titled “Gulag”). And please read the memoirs of those who suffered under the Soviet system as political or religious dissidents (Andrei Sakharov and Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn are people to start with). And one of the more harrowing and unpleasant things to do is to read a biography of Stalin. It is a shameful and disgraceful gesture for any person living in the 21st century to treat the image of the hammer and sickle glibly, or as a fashion statement. Far too many bodies and minds were crushed under that symbol to treat it with anything short of disdain and mockery. Yes, it’s as bad as wearing a swastika. If you do sport Soviet images I would ask you to simply consider doing some serious reading of 20th century history before continuing to do so. It is an offense to the dissident dead not to do so.
