“I am gay”: West Point Graduate, Lt. Dan Choi, Comes Out as Gay, and Is Kicked Out of Barack Obama’s Military!

Where is President Obama on this?

According to Rachel Maddow today, Lt. Dan Choi recently received a dismissal letter from the military for coming out as gay. Here’s a segment from Maddow’s show in which Choi publicly declared his sexual orientation:

Kicking people out of the military because they are gay is so 1990s. It’s now 2009, and this simply has to stop. President Obama can stop it. Let’s see if he does.

How is he only a LT after 5 years of active duty required of a West Point graduate? And a year in the National Guard? What else did this guy not do to prevent being promoted? 10 years afterward…6 years in the Army and not a CPT? Really bizarre. Promotion rate to CPT from 1LT is 98% in 3 years..and you keep rank in going from active duty to National Guard. And if you don’t make it in 3, you’re pretty much guaranteed to make it in 4 or be kicked out. His public statements might have been just the icing on the cake.

    Skip,

He may be a shitty soldier. But you implicitly defaming him, and casting doubt on his record, does not change the injustice of his situation. Obviously, he has never been dishonorably discharged. And he is a lieutenant. Are you saying that he should stay closeted? It’s not a hard question. And if so, why? What’s wrong with being gay, or being openly gay, in the military?
