But, hey, don’t blame O’Reilly for giving aid and comfort to far-right racist and Antisemitic elements in America, right?
In light of U.S. Holocaust Museum rifleman James W. von Brunn’s white supremicist Internet screeds, and Fox News’s attempt to set distance between itself and Brunn’s rhetoric, I think it’s important to remind ourselves that Fox News sometimes lends broad public legitimacy to far-right racism and conspiracy paranoia by, well, framing an issue in precisely its terms, as when Bill O’Reilly said to John McCain concerning immigration:
But do you understand what the New York Times wants, and the far-left want? They want to break down the white, Christian, male power structure, which you’re a part, and so am I, and they want to bring in millions of foreign nationals to basically break down the structure that we have.
In O’Reilly’s statement, notice that he explicitly sets the New York Times against the “white, Christian, male power structure.” This is exactly the way that Antisemites frame the New York Times against Christianity (commonly calling the paper the “Jew York Times”).
Here’s the O’Reilly segment with McCain:
