LHC Watch: Physicist Otto Rossler Thinks the Large Hadron Collider Could Destroy the Earth

In an interview with Alan Gillis, Otto Rossler, a Max Plank Institute chemist and physicist with 300 scientific papers to his credit, thinks the Large Hadron Collider could destroy the Earth. Here he describes his visit to CERN this summer:

Alan Gillis: You mentioned Dr Rolf Landua earlier. You had an interview with him at CERN this July 4th about your black hole theories. What happened?

Dr. Rossler: It was an amiable meeting. When I arrived at the airport there were two ladies from Zurich expecting me. In order for me not to be alone. They were LHC activists. They accompanied me to CERN. When Landua came, he offered all three of us a ride to the ATLAS Detector. So there were four of us at the meeting later in the CERN cafeteria, with the view of Mount Blanc. He promised, since he couldn’t disprove my Relativity argument, that he knew several famous people in Relativity working at CERN that would talk to me. I was happy that there would be another discussion. Before we left, I reminded Landua of our next meeting with the Relativists. He didn’t recall suggesting one, that it wasn’t necessary. He said he would send my paper along to an expert. The matter is still pending. If I am wrong, I want at least to know where I am wrong.

There are 2500 physicists working at CERN. Don’t you think it would be nice if one of them would, like, get back with Dr. Rossler about his concerns before the collider goes with full throttle up?

    ===================================
    So the count is 2500 to one that consider Rossler a nut case. 2500 people that consider him Chicken Little. Why would they want to get back to him?

    Doug,

    If Rossler was a one off case, fine. But he’s not. Skeptic is a pro-science magazine (which I’m guessing that you know), and it has an extended article in its most current issue on CERN “black holes are no problem” skeptics. See here:

    Probably all will go well, but on such an important issue caution ought to be maximal. Scientists could well be surprised in working with such high energies. I, personally, doubt that scientists understand black holes as well as they imagine.

    Maybe, some want to see what’s on the other side. No matter what.
