Jesus and John the Baptist Depicted in Their Mothers’ Wombs—with Halos!

This is a trippy Armenian Christian image of Mary meeting up with Elizabeth while Jesus and John the Baptist are still in their bellies:

The softness and sympathy of the women’s exchange of glances—so humane and accessible—is rather curiously contrasted with the mature and severe depictions of Jesus and John the Baptist. They seem, in contrast with their mothers, already old and narrowly focused on their religious mission. Jesus appears to be laying a saying or sermon of instruction of some sort on John the Baptist’s attentive ear. Apparently, there is no play for the righteous (for the holy fox knows one big thing, the not so holy hedgehog many smaller things). For myself, I think I prefer the motherly hedgehogs to their monomaniacal sons.
