“Everybody who came to our wedding is dead!”

Both of my wife’s parents are alive and in their late 70s, and here’s what her mother said in response to the idea of having a big 50th wedding anniversary party:

Everybody who came to our wedding is dead!

My wife’s mom often comes out with startling statements like this, and I thought that this one was quite poignant. She’s still got it.

Here’s some old wedding footage from the 1960s. It’s not my wife’s parent’s wedding, but as you watch it realize that many—perhaps most—of the adults in the footage are long gone. Their silence speaks. Carpe diem:
