A Dog Pauses to Remember the Ground of Being and Seek Its Assistance in Love

This dog, I think, is doing three things right:

  • he’s remembering the Ground of Being;
  • he’s feeling gratitude at his very existence; and
  • he’s seeking help in his progress toward greater love (not chasing cats so much).

One could do worse in life.

Much worse.

  1. Yeah, maybe. But how much of this is “ground of being” and how much of it is Blaise Pascal — “act as if you believe and you will come to believe.”

      Necromancer:

      The thing is that God (or whatever you want to call this fearsome thing that we are in) is great and we are small. That part of the ontological mystery is not hard to recognize at all—not hard to talk yourself into believing. It’s a fact. We were born into a furnace. And if there is anything purposeful behind this great thing, then that means we might well speak to it (if we are greatful for being a part of it, however terrifying). And, opaque as this great thing is, there is another fact, one overriding fact: love and beauty and truth and novelty exist in the universe, and these are worth asking for greater capacities for (if the ground of being is conscious). It may not matter one wit whether one feels gratitude for one’s existence, but if you do feel gratitude, where do you “mail” the message of this gratitude?
