Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell: Child Sexual Abuse in the Catholic Church under John Paul II

Talk about a den of thieves molesters! This stunning bit of news was reported today in the New York Times:

A newly disclosed document reveals that Vatican officials told the bishops of Ireland in 1997 that they had serious reservations about the bishops’ policy of mandatory reporting of priests suspected of child abuse to the police or civil authorities.

And who was pope in 1997?

John Paul II, who is also up for sainthood and has, of late, been designated by Pope Benedict with the following moniker:

The Great.

Isn’t that sick?

How does any organization—let alone one supposedly devoted to high ideals—lose its moral compass so utterly?
