Men Are From Africa, Women Are From Africa

In Christopher Ryan’s TED talk on human sexuality and evolutionary psychology, I like his closing quip: “It’s time we moved beyond Mars and Venus, because the truth is that men are from Africa and women are from Africa.”

Ryan’s book, Sex at Dawn (Harper 2011), is here.

Awesome talk. I read ‘Sex at Dawn’ and thought it was fantastic.

This talk, while entertaining, ignores the more fundamental lesson of Darwin: Better choices make for more success. While humans as individuals are extremely adaptive behaviorally, the societies which have been able to enforce monogamous behavior are far more successful than any of the ‘examples from nature’ he was referring to. Virtually all of his counter examples to socially embraced monogamy are facing extinction. Is that what we really wish to achieve?
