2 Responses to Question (a poem for DREAMer Daniela Vargas, in the United States since age seven, arrested in retaliation for exercising her free speech, 2017)
Nice poem. Ditto the following one. However, the potential impact is negated by your totally undeserving dedicatee. “Arrested in retaliation for exercising her free speech” — not!; as is abundantly evident from even a cursory reading of numerous sources.
The NYT is, as is so often the case, an exception. Its report is so biased that it easily results in the aforementioned incorrect inference. It is an example so egregious that it can only be described as ‘fake news’. But, if you relied only on the NYT that, in itself, was a bad failure on your part. (I havn’t bothered to check what WaPo might have reported. Likely more ‘fake news’)
Your use of the phrase “totally undeserving” is excessive. Daniela Vargas may or may not be the best example of someone treated unjustly under the new Trump ICE deportation force, but how her situation goes (and that of Daniel Ramirez Martinez) will have enormous consequences for the other 700,000 people who, though not yet citizens, came to the United States as children. These two people are the first among them to be arrested, and I notice that right-wing sites are attempting to defame both of them.
My concern with Daniela is how closely in time her attempt to bring attention to her plight was tied to her arrest. If it wasn’t retaliation that drove her arrest, it sure walked like that duck. It sends a signal to Dreamers that if they seek to bring attention to their plight, and speak out at rallies, they risk swift retaliation from ICE.
