In a recent poll, Public Policy Polling (PPP) has learned the following:
- 46% of Mississippi Republicans think interracial marriage should be illegal.
- 74% of those same Republicans view Sarah Palin favorably.
Here’s Tom Jensen:
We asked voters on this poll whether they think interracial marriage should be legal or illegal- 46% of Mississippi Republicans said it should be illegal to just 40% who think it should be legal. Palin’s net favorability with folks who think interracial marriage should be illegal (+55 at 74/19) is 17 points higher than it is with folks who think interracial marriage should be legal (+38 at 64/26.)
On her way to the Republican nomination, Sarah’s got the Mississippi racist vote banked.
I also think it’s reasonable to infer that her Mississippi supporters generally oppose, not just blacks marrying whites, but men marrying men, women marrying women, and Christians marrying Muslims.
That about covers it. “Pro-family politics.”
You may want to add that the PPP is affiliated with the Democratic Party. They also have the following disclaimer in that study:
“The survey’s margin of error is +/-4.9%. Other factors, such as refusal to be interviewed and weighting, may introduce additional error that is more difficult to quantify.”
There are a lot polls saying this and that. Gallup and Pew are unaffiliated and have a good rep and also conduct much larger surveys. This study is based on a mere 400 participants.
It would be interesting to find out what this small number of respondents’ reasoning was since it could be quite different from the racial purity that Liberals would automatically expect. Not to say, of course, that any Liberal would ever believe another reason if given by a White.
A lot of them might actually hold this view because of the divorce rate or something similar. That’s overly paternalistic but not racist.
When I read this online a few days ago, I was a little troubled to say the least. The video also made me feel a little sick. I may have to repost that or link over to this post in my own blog if you don’t mind, professor.
