Susan Neiman, in her book, “Moral Clarity,” writes of America with regards to the Enlightenment:
Fragonard’s painting of Ben Franklin, commanding both lightening and justice in a cloud of biblical and Roman references, left no doubt about where the power of the future lay.
But I’m wondering if she’s referring to this Benjamin West painting: http://www.flickr.com/photos/franklinremix/99760623 and simply got the name of the painter wrong. I haven’t been able to find a Fragonard portrait of Franklin that matches her description. Perhaps someone can provide a link?
